DSJ Investigation: Educational Opportunity Gaps
MATH SKILL FOCUS: Calculating Summary Statistics and Displaying Data

For this assignment, use the Desmos Graphing Calculator (www.desmos.com/calculator) to find the requested statistics and to sketch the requested graphs.

Go to the website EdGap.org.  Click on the state of Washington.

  1. Choose 10 census areas within light blue regions (median household income of $20k-$40k).  List the name of the school and the average SAT score for that school.  Find the 5-number summary of your data.
  2. Choose 10 census areas within dark blue regions (median household income of $90k-$150k).  List the name of the school and the average SAT score for that school.  Find the 5-number summary of your data.
  3. Create stacked boxplots of your two data sets (on the same Desmos screen).
  4. Write a paragraph summarizing your results.  What is similar and different about your graphs? What does this imply about the different groups?
  5. Calculate the mean for your 2 data sets and compare their values.  Write a paragraph summarizing your results. Are they similar or significantly different?  How does each group’s SAT average compare to the national average SAT score of 1060?  What might this imply about the relationship between household income and SAT scores?  Why do you think these variations do (or do not) exist?
