I use the Adjective Name exercise near the beginning of each term that I teach Social and Emotional Communication. It asks each person to choose an adjective that starts with the same letter or sound as their first name, has a positive meaning, and is personal to them. Throughout the term every time a person speaks they will start with their adjective names. Students usually enjoy finding the right adjective for themselves, and it really helps us all learn each other’s names. It also has the positive effect of reinforcing or affirming the quality of the adjective that the student chosen for themself.
