Bias and Identity

Jenny Rogoff

I invite students to create a social identities chart for their identities or use the Social Identity Wheel activity.

I introduce the concept of unconscious/implicit bias and have students complete at least one of the implicit bias tests through the Project Implicit (Harvard).

Upon completion of their chosen test, I have the students reflect on the experience and how implicit bias impacts us as healthcare providers. I then provide the opportunity for students to discuss their learning in the class discussions if they’d like to. I have found that the test results can be shocking to some students so doing the assignment individually (and not in discussion forums or “forced’ small group discussion) has been most successful in allowing students the space to reflect and open up in a more comfortable environment.
