My Identity

In nowadays society, having a strong sense of identity is important, because identity can give people an awareness of who you are as a person, identity includes your physical appearance, family, nationality, race, language, religion, and gender…. So many factors make up me currently. It is these factors that make mixed groups of individuals in the world. Our attitude at work, the way we treat others, and our culture, even our dietary habits….that all affected by our identity. For example, I am from China, I speak Mandarin, I talk more implicitly, and I wear more conservative…..

I grew up in a small coastal town in China, the town’s name is Lvshun, and Lvshun means to have a good trip in Chinese. that is an important military port in my country. My father is a Navy and my mom is an accountant in an automobile factory. We are a family of three, living a dull and happy life. My mom often cooks savory seafood dishes for us. In my impression, all the students have heavy school academics in China. On the contrary, my elementary school principal is a nice musical teacher, he likes to lead us to go outside to enjoy nature, and he is opposed to only focusing on academics but ignoring the students’ physical and mental health. My favorite thing is our teacher always drives us to go to the beach, we will gather seafood on the beach when the tide is ebbing. I remember once I gathered a lot of seafood that was my favorite, but my basket was not enough to hold all the seafood, I took off my jacket to hold them, and I brought all the seafood back home and waited for my mom to praise me, instead, I just got her to complain as my jacket is wet through. But I am still thrilled because we got the seafood feast as usual. I went to the city after I began to work, I had my favorite job and enjoyed the urbanism. I led a pretty mundane but full life. I want to change that maybe my life should be colorful, and our family decided to see the outside world.

I moved from China to the US in 2019, this is a gap year not only for me but also for the world, as the pandemic is coming. Few people talk about race in China. So before 2019, I did not even know anything about the word” racism” Until I came to America in August 2019, I found people of the same race would gather together, such as Black with Black, White with White, Asian with Asian…… I am Chinese, I am a Taoist believer, and female. I have some Chinese friends here. I also was eager to make American friends and other countries’ friends, I have some friends from Vietnam, Israel, and Chile…. Following this, I tried my best to study English and made an effort to integrate with the local community better. I am glad my parents gave me a healthy body and my family gave me a healthy mentality. I grew up surrounded by their love, even if we were not very rich. The student is my new identity this year. As I am an international student, I can not work and have no income, so I am not a rich person. Although I have a house in America, I haven’t a sense of belonging, and sometimes I even avoid quarrels with others as English is not my mother language. So I feel have little power in here.

All in all, this is my identity currently. Identity makes me perceive who am I and my position in this society. I think identity is your background in the world, like every country has its own history, we can consider identity as a person’s history, we can not change it. Identity affects everyone’s life in the world, so various identities mark up the colorful world, although we have different identities, we should respect each other and be tolerant of each other. Our identity is what makes us unique and is a part of this world.
