My Journey

Nathan Coleman

Hi, my name is Nathan. I wanted to talk and let you get to know me today. One of the things I question sometimes is what am I? Why am I here? Who am I supposed to be? But it is ok if I question a bit still; I am only 18 and have a few years. But it is important to know your identity, especially if you are trying to get a job because you need to know what you genuinely want to do. Or at least a field that you will not get mad or upset by it. I grew up in Washington state for my whole life. My family life is great of course we have times where we might disagree but in the end. My schooling is hard sometimes, but I try hard to build habits for school. But overall, I love school and the people I get to learn with.

When I was 9, I had kidney cancer. I had to go through a hard and long 10 months. It involved chemo and radiation with 4 surgeries as well. It was challenging for me as a young kid. But when it was all done all that really changed was that I saw the world in an incredibly beautiful way. I try to look for the good in people and in things, but I also have learned that not everyone wants help but just being there helps. It also taught me to fight for the future of my life. So, I am thankful for what happened.

I am a white male, I am straight, and I am a Christian. I only know English, but I am learning Japanese. I am also a proud American citizen. I am thankful to be living with my parents in a safe home. It puts me in a position of a more dominant group of people. Cause there is a lot of white straight males who are Christian. I have freedoms that some people do not have because of where I am at. My concluding thoughts as I finish this document. It is that I have been through many things that have pushed me back. There are many things that have also pushed me forward in life.

I understand that I have privileges that some people do not have, and I understand that I am a part of a large group of people that tend to be more dominant than most groups. I am very thankful for being able to learn from the lessons of life and being able to come back stronger than ever before. I am thankful for my family and friends who have supported me throughout the years and thank you for those new friends in my life.
