Discussion Difference in A Biology Course (2021)
“Discuss and analyze how categories of difference are or have been created, maintained, and experienced through power, privilege, and inequity.” This is a perfect outcome for discussing inequities in health care. There are many examples of differential treatment for patients depending on their race, socioeconomic status, or gender.
Here are two examples:
- Pain management. Studies show that racial and ethnic minorities consistently receive inadequate pain management.
- Management of chronic disease. There are significant differences in management and susceptibility to chronic disease conditions (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc) based on racial and socioeconomic status.
Because I will be teaching entry level/high school students, I may not assign these particular readings from primary literature, but something similar for them to read. This would be followed by a guided discussion in class, and finally by a short reflective writing.
